Humanity has again used up all biological resources that our planet regenerates during the entire year by July 29, 2021, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year. This year, the date is July 29.

Earth Overshoot Day is hosted and calculated by Global Footprint Network, an international research organization that provides decision-makers with a menu of tools to help the human economy operate within Earth’s ecological limits.

A press statement by the WWF noted that: Humanity currently uses 74 per cent more than what the planet’s ecosystems can regenerate — or 1.7 Earths. From Earth Overshoot Day until the end of the year, humanity operates on ecological deficit spending.

This spending was currently some of the largest since the world entered into ecological overshoot in the early 1970s, according to the National Footprint & Biocapacity Accounts based on UN datasets, the statement added.

The Global Footprint Network found that the total global ecological footprint increased by 6.6% compared to 2020, based on data from the International Energy Agency and the Global Carbon Project.

Last year, the global forest biocapacity — the natural resources in forests — decreased by 0.5%, mainly due to a large spike in deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. Forests are a key to slowing climate change because they can store carbon for long periods of time.

Nearly 20 years after invading Afghanistan to oust the Taliban and al-Qaida, the U.S. military has vacated its biggest airfield in the country, advancing a final withdrawal that the Pentagon says will be completed by the end of August, 2021.

President Joe Biden had instructed the Pentagon to complete the military withdrawal by September 11, the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States, but the Pentagon now says it can finish the drawdown a little earlier. In fact, the drawdown is already largely complete and officials said it could be wrapped up soon.

Bagram Airfield has been the epicentre of the war to oust the Taliban and hunt down the al-Qaida perpetrators of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America. At its peak in and around 2012, Bagram Airfield saw more than 1,00,000 U.S. troops involving in anti-taliban operations.

Victory or defeat?

As America’s war in Afghanistan draws to a close, there will be no surrender and no peace treaty, no final victory and no decisive defeat. Biden says it was enough that US forces dismantled al-Qaida and killed Osama bin Laden, the group’s leader considered the mastermind of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Background: The former Soviet Union marched into Afghanistan on Christmas Eve, 1979, claiming it was invited by the new Afghan communist leader, Babrak Karmal, and setting the country on a path of 40 years of seemingly endless wars and conflict.

After the Soviets left in humiliation, America was the next great power to wade in. Following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the US invaded to oust the Taliban regime, which had harbored al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden. After nearly 20 years, the US is ending its war in Afghanistan, withdrawing the last American troops.

The post US hands Bagram Airfield to Afghanistan after nearly 20 years first appeared on SURABOOKS.COM.

Pushkar Singh Dhami took oath as the eleventh chief minister of Uttarakhand in Dehradun on July 4, 2021. Dhami succeeds Garhwal MP Tirath Singh Rawat, who had resigned recently. Dhami, a two-time MLA from Khatima, is the youngest chief minister of Uttarakhand at the age of 45. His oath of office was administered by Uttarakhand Governor Baby Rani Maurya. Dhami is the third chief minister of Uttarakhand in four months.

Mr. Rawat had quit citing constitutional reasons, of not seeing his way clear to getting elected as a member of the Assembly in Uttarakhand within the stipulated six month period. He continues to be a Lok Sabha MP from the State.

Background: Mr. Rawat took over as Chief Minister on March 10, 2021 after being chosen by the BJP. As per the Constitution, he had six months, till September 10, to become a member of the Uttarakhand Assembly in order to continue in the post.

According to Election Commission, it had not yet decided on holding by-elections to various Rajya Sabha and Assembly seats that are vacant across the country. The EC had to examine the COVID-19 situation in the States before taking a call.

After the West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Puducherry elections were concluded in May, the EC decided to defer the by-elections for Parliamentary and Assembly seats due to the pandemic.

At the same time, the Representation of the People Act, 1951, mandates that a by-election for any vacancy should be held within six months of that vacancy arising, provided the remainder of the term is not less than one year or the EC and the Centre do not certify that holding the by poll in that time frame is difficult.

With the Uttarakhand Assembly term till March 23, 2022, general elections in the State are less than a year away.

The post Uttarakhand’s 11th Chief Minister first appeared on SURABOOKS.COM.

It was founded by a Parsi scholar Fardoonji Murazban, who had experimented with various other publishing options before landing on this successful print run.

Formerly called Bombay Samachar, in Gujarati the paper has always run as Mumbai na Samachar. It started as a weekly edition, primarily covering the movement of goods across the sea and other business news, such as the sale of property, and passed through several hands until bankruptcy turned it over to the Cama family in 1933.

Currently, more than 200 staff members and offices across four other centres apart from Mumbai, bring out a single daily edition of the paper, making it the oldest running vernacular newspaper in India. Mumbai Samachar also publishes a panchang (astrological almanac).

The post India’s oldest running Newspaper first appeared on SURABOOKS.COM.
